Frostbites 05

This year’s frostbites started on November 6 and will run until the end of March. We have a record six boats entered and 21 members involved. Crew List.

On race day 1 the "SID" line honours went to Ralph and Nicola who finished 6'th of the 15 starters in their first race. It was a first time racing for 6 of the 8 crew so well done to everybody involved.

For day two we again had 4 boats racing, with Nicola again the leading light for SID finishing 9'th out of 18. Again we had three first timers, and a few old hands who had started their racing careers the week before. All boats finished this time so we're getting better!
You can check out the latest results from DMYC.

If you wish to take part please let me know.

Glenans Competent Crew Course

This is a great opportunity for SID members to enhance their cruising skills by following the ISA Competent Crew syllabus with Glenans Sailing club over a series of 3-4 weekends, sailing from Poolbeg Marina in Ringsend, Dublin in Dublin Bay. The first course of this type took place over four weekends in October with two SID members, Una Collins and Gary Coady participating. From Una “This course is a great way to have some concentrated sailing sessions during which you can build up experience and skills in cruising, without leaving town"...

Read more about Gary’s and Una’s experience of the course...

Baltimore - October Bank Holiday Weekend

Halloween came a day earlier to Baltimore for SID trick or treaters Carina, Chris, Damien, Ellen, Eleanor, Paschal and Niamh. Sailing was limited due to gales but a good time was had by all. SID at GISC Baltiomore Party

Paschal and Niamh were off early on Monday for a little Christmas boat shopping. Best of luck with your new boat.

Ruffian Trip - Malahide

Damien skippered the Ruffian on a weekend trip to Malahide the weekend of October 21-22. Here is Robin's account of the trip.

After a short security briefing we left Dun Laoghaire at 7 PM for a night sail with Damien and Gary. Conditions were good but cold, wind Force 3, good waves. It was very busy in the bay with all the ships entering the channel, we passed by the Howth's nose and arrived in front of Malahide at 10 PM. Navigation of Malahide's estuary by night, with rain and a lot of
wind is a bit tricky (we had sometimes less than 2 meters under the keel)....a good exercise. Finally we tied up the boat at 11 PM in the marina.

The braves spent the night in the ruffian (cosy !) ... and I woke up in Malahide's marina with a fantastic bright sun and a young black seal staring at me.

We spent a very nice Saturday with Damien, Keith and Clare. At first trying to go up to the north around Rockabill (Island off Skerries) but because the wind was too light we had to change our plans, so we went around Lambay island instead, and came home after a great days sailing.

Thanks to Damien for organizing the trip.

Robin

Ruffian Liftout - Maintanence Day

The Ruffian liftout is delayed as we are waiting for the trailer to be repaired. The good news is that this means that the boat is in the water ready to sail on weekends.

Keith will be organizing a maintenence day once the lift out happens. I would appreciate if you can give Keith any help you can if you are available.
